Christmas is one of the best times of the year and as the festivities are already in full swing this December it’s important to stay vigilant and be aware of possible hazards so you can have a safe and fun Christmas.

Cooking

The kitchen is often one of the most frequented places during December, here are our top tips to ensure you don’t burn the turkey as well as your house!

– When cooking ensure that you are not under the influence, as alcohol can delay reaction times and your focus which is necessary when preparing food.

–  Avoid leaving cooking appliances unattended and ensure you do not leave the house when food is cooking.

– Keep consumable items such as clothes, towels and oven mitts away from stoves to prevent fire.

Trees

If you haven’t already decorated your house, you are probably getting ready to pluck up the courage to retrieve the vast number of boxes filled with decorations that you have stored up in your attic, here’s a few things to keep in mind.

–  Although many artificial trees are made from flame-retardant materials to help prevent ignition and slow the spread of flames, ensure that you lookout for a label that confirms the tree complies with fire safety standards.

– If you decide to opt for a real tree, ensure that the tree is watered to prevent it from drying out – as dry trees are more flammable.

– Don’t place your tree next to heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, and candles and try not to block any exits with the tree.

Christmas Lights

Christmas lights add a touch of festive charm but can be a potential fire hazard if not used with consideration. Before putting up your lights ensure:

– Check the lights wiring and bulbs for any signs of damage and discard the lights if they pose a hazard.

– Only use lights that meet required safety standards and refrain from buying cheap lights online.

– Ensure to turn your lights off when not in use as lights can overheat if left on for prolonged periods of time.

– Don’t overload your sockets by connecting too many sets of lights as this can cause electrical sparking and fires.

Candle Safety

Candles can be hazardous especially if surrounded by festive decorations and if not used correctly. Try and use battery powered candles if possible.

– Keep away from decorations and flammable items such as curtains.

– Never leave a candle unattended and keep away from direct reach of children and pets.

–  Always place candles on sturdy and flat surfaces and ensure to extinguish the flame when you leave the room.

Smoke Alarm

– Ensure your fire safety is up to date especially before decorations are put up and test your alarms regularly to ensure they are in fully working condition. Rooms can accumulate more dust than usual during Christmas so ensure that your alarms are also dusted regularly to prevent the sensor from being blocked.

Have a great Christmas and stay safe!
