Downlights are a popular lighting choice in homes and properties as they offer a more modern and sleeker look, they are particularly popular in bathrooms and kitchens where moisture and condensation is prevalent. Poorly installed downlights can be a fire risk if installed poorly in your property, and it’s important to remember that downlights should only be installed by a professional in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and in compliance with fire safety regulations. The information below gives an insight into what you need to know about Fire Rated Downlights.
What is a fire rated downlight?
Fire-rated downlights are specially designed lighting fixtures that help preserve the fire-resistant properties of the ceiling where they are installed. Unlike standard downlights, they slow the spread of fire, enhancing safety. When installing recessed downlights, choosing fire-rated options is essential to maintaining the ceiling’s fire resistance.
When should I replace my downlights?
Downlights should eventually be replaced if they have been in use for ten years, as they can pose a safety risk. Here is a list of signs that indicate when you need to replace them to ensure your property stays free from electrical risks.
Exterior Damage
Physical signs of damage such as rust, cracks and warping are a clear indication that your downlight is past its best and should be swapped out.
Electrical Issues
If the bulbs regular burn out or buzz this may be a sign that the wiring is faulty, remember that just because you can’t see the wiring doesn’t mean there isn’t a problem with it!
Incompatibility with LED
Outdated downlights may not be compatible with newer LED downlights. LED light delivers more lumens and are more energy efficient, saving you money.

Modern downlights have far better features in comparison to outdated downlights, for example colour changing temperatures, better fire resistance, faster installation, and improved safety features.

Before installation or maintenance ensure that the mains supply to the luminaire is switched off and the circuit supply fuses are removed or circuit breaker turned off. A qualified electrician must be consulted or used for the installation of this luminaire.
It is important that the luminaire is only installed to the relevant building regulations, and that the load on the circuit is checked including when the luminaire is fitted and does not exceed the rating of the circuit cable fuse or circuit breaker. Also ensure that the units are fitted in the area before install.
- Cut a suitable hole in the ceiling as per the cut-out details, and ensure that it does not damage electrical cables, water/gas pipes or ceiling joists.
- Hold back the spring clip and push the lamp in. Make sure the downlight is fixed tightly and properly in the ceiling.
Failure to install the downlight correctly will compromise the features of the product.
