The importance of a Carbon Monoxide Detector in Caravans, Motorhomes and Boats

Due to the confined spaces of leisure accommodation vehicles and recreational crafts, the use of gas appliances in these spaces can unfortunately be susceptible to CO especially when ventilation is limited.

Because of this, the BS:EN 50291-2:2019 was introduced for ensuring safety of electrical apparatus for the detection of carbon monoxide in domestic premises and electrical apparatus for continuous operation in a fixed installation in recreational vehicles and similar premises including recreational craft.

This standard requires a minimum of one carbon monoxide alarm is required in a room that is being used as living accommodation that contains a combustion appliance.

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Commonly referred to as the silent killer, Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous gas because you cannot see, smell, or taste it.

In England and Wales, approximately forty deaths are reported every year due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Motorhome and caravan users, are an at-risk group because of the common use of fossil fuels such as coal, wood, gas, and charcoal.

Prevention is the most important and effective method of defending the fatal gas from entering your living quarters. It is critical to maintain as much airflow around appliances as possible when in use and install safety appliances where required.

Symptoms

The symptoms from CO poisoning aren’t always obvious and are dependent on the level of exposure.

However, these are the most common:

•              Headache

•              Dizziness

•              Nausea & Vomiting

•              Tiredness & Confusion

•              Stomach Pain

•              Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing

These symptoms can gradually worsen with prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide.

Preventing CO Poisoning in caravans & recreational crafts

Caravans and boats should be fitted with an alarm in the same room as any combustion appliance(s). If the caravan or boat has a single living space which incorporates the sleeping accommodation, it can be considered to be equivalent to a bedsit, and a single alarm is sufficient. However, any sleeping accommodation that is in a separate room from the combustion appliance(s) should also contain an alarm.

Our Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Detector is officially compliant with BS EN 50291-2:2019, making it suitable for installation in leisure accommodation vehicles and recreational craft.

The Hispec 10yr Battery Operated Carbon Monoxide Detector, provides reliable and long-lasting protection against carbon monoxide leaks. Ideal for residential and commercial use, this detector offers peace of mind with minimal maintenance requirements.

Due to the very different construction methods and sizes of caravans and boats no exact advice on the positioning of carbon monoxide alarms can be given.

For caravans and boats the positioning of the device should be based on the following criteria:

— Do not mount the apparatus directly over a heat, draft, or vapor source; and if possible, install the apparatus at a distance of at least 1 m to a maximum of 3 m from the possible carbon monoxide source.
