We’re pleased to announce that Hispec has been named a finalist in the Product & Innovation Award category at the 2026 Justice Estates and Infrastructure Awards.
The recognition is for our work on the Integrated Smoke Detection Project, a practical fire-detection solution developed to improve remote staff warning within custodial establishments.
Responding to an urgent fire-safety need
The project began after a fire risk assessment identified an urgent need to improve remote fire warning within two wings of a custodial establishment.
We were approached to develop a solution that could be introduced quickly, without the cost, disruption and lengthy timescales associated with replacing the establishment’s full commercial fire-alarm system.
Within eight days of being approached, the pilot system we designed was installed and fully commissioned, helping prevent the potential loss of 400 spaces.
Developing a practical solution
The Integrated Smoke Detection system provides a Tier 2 solution that bridges the gap between standalone battery alarms and a full automatic fire-detection system.
It uses radio-frequency interlinked smoke and heat alarms. When one device detects a potential fire, the connected alarms activate and a visual beacon alerts staff.
A handheld Hush and Locate control unit allows staff to identify the originating alarm quickly. The system can also interface with the fire control panel, supporting predetermined actions and helping staff make a more informed response.
Devices can be configured and paired before arriving on site, reducing the time contractors need to spend working within sensitive operational areas.
Designed for complex environments
The system has continued to evolve in response to the challenges found across different custodial establishments.
Its latest fully wireless design reduces the need for cabling and intrusive building work. This makes it particularly suitable for sites affected by confirmed or suspected asbestos, restricted access or longer-term fire-improvement programmes.
The wireless system can reduce installation time by up to fourfold, helping to lower costs, reduce resource requirements and minimise disruption.
Supporting wider improvements across the custodial estate
The solution has now been deployed across seven custodial establishments. Learning from each installation has helped us adapt the system to different layouts, infrastructure and operational requirements.
Its modular design means it can be tailored to individual establishments while providing a consistent approach to improving fire detection across the wider custodial estate.
Being shortlisted for the Product & Innovation Award recognises the technical development, collaboration and practical problem-solving behind the project.
The winners will be announced at the Justice Estates & Infrastructure Awards ceremony on 18 November 2026.
