What is TM66?

TM66 stands for “Technical memorandum 66 creating a circular economy in the lighting industry”.

In October 2021, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers’ (CIBSE’s) Society of Light and Lighting (SLL) launched the TM66 framework. This innovative framework provides a clear roadmap for designing and manufacturing sustainable lighting solutions.

Crucially, TM66 champions a circular economy approach, minimising waste throughout a product’s lifecycle. Beyond simply offering guidance, TM66 features a transparent scoring system to assess the circularity of lighting products. By embracing these principles, the lighting industry can significantly reduce its environmental footprint and create more sustainable lighting solutions.

Lighting Product Design at Hispec

Wherever possible when designing and developing new products it is vital that we take circular economy principles into consideration.

This should not include only the performance of the product, but also the ability to remove and replace component parts which have a limited lifespan, from parts which have a potential indefinite lifespan such as the housing.

With this in mind we have created our SWiTCH range which allows the contractor to switch between multiple wattage outputs and change between multiple colour temperature options. A benefit of this is the reduction of the amount of unit variations required in stock by a seller, increasing stock availability with fewer logistical demands all reducing carbon footprint. One fitting can for example be 4 different wattage outputs, with 3 different colour variations, meaning 1 fitting is potentially replacing 12.

Additional product functions and options can be offered to even further reduce the number of fittings required, features such as plug-in modules for emergency and sensor, giving the ability to turn a standard light fitting into options such as emergency, sensor, sensor emergency etc.

A further benefit of these plug-in modules is when and if they fail, they are easily replaced in the fitting, this way the entire fitting doesn’t need replacing, the modules can then be sent back to the manufacturer for re-purposing, repairing or efficient recycling.
